A four-alarm fire broke out early Tuesday at a strip mall in Perth
Amboy, tearing through a row of multiple businesses and leaving at least three of them destroyed.
The fire on Smith Street was called in by a passerby
around 4:15 a.m. near the train station. It took three hours to get
under control.
According
to a fire official, at least three businesses, two restaurants and a tax prep
site were completely destroyed
by the fire. The roof
caved in, and there is debris
everywhere. Three other businesses –
a drug store, nail salon and shoe store -- were damaged.
“When we pulled on scene, it was a well-advanced fire,”
says Fire Chief Edward Mullen. “There was a new alarm system activated. At one
point, all three businesses were engulfed in flames in the fire, and did go
through the roof. The roof, all the ceilings, are completely gone. The building
is a total loss.”
The official says no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
