New Jersey’s General Assembly gave its final approval to five school bus safety bills today, a few of many that have been in consideration since last summer.
The legislation was prompted by the deadly I-80 crash in May which left a student and teacher dead and 40 others injured.
One bill would require school bus operations in the state to comply with certain federal regulations.
A second requires principals to keep a list of students on school buses to be used in case of emergency.
One requires safety education training for drivers twice per year.
Another requires drivers to submit a medical certificate proving physical fitness to the Motor Vehicle Commission.
The last requires the Board of Education be notified when a bus driver’s license is suspended or revoked.
