A man confessed to lighting fire to a Jersey City building over jealousy, leaving six families homeless.
Arson investigators say cameras installed in the apartment building?s smoke detectors caught Fredrico Fernadez in the act. Police say Fernandez admitted to the crime when he was confronted with the evidence. The suspect says he was upset with the property owner for flirting with his girlfriend of six months Luz Scharon. Scharon?s daughter says she thought Fernandez was a nice guy when she met him, but she says 19 fires occurred in the building during the relationship.
Authorities say there may be more to the case than Fernandez is letting on. They say Scharon stood to gain financial reimbursement from the landlord if her Section 8 apartment went up in flames. Fernandez has not been charged in connection with the 18 other fires and police say his girlfriend was arrested for lying to investigators.
