Army Sgt. Michael Huson saves couple in overturned truck on I-78

A United States Army sergeant from Newark is being hailed as a hero for saving a couple during his morning commute.

First Sgt. Michael Huson was exiting Interstate-78 on his way to work in Newark earlier this month when he saw a tractor-trailer on its side.

"I noticed the tire was moving a little bit and there was a little bit of smoke...so I realized this probably just happened," Sgt. Huson says.

He says he tried to kick out the window from the front of the cab, but says it was too hard.

"I don't know if you've ever tried to kick a window out of a tractor trailer. It's not very easy so I was immediately humbled," Huson says.

A man and a woman were trapped inside the truck. Huson says he had to climb on top of it to get to them.

"I noticed there was some gas coming down, I had to get over the smokestack. I had to lift up the door, kind of like a hatch," he says.

Huson says that he was able to get the woman out of the truck, but did not want to move the man until emergency services arrived. They were able to cut him out of the truck.

Huson says that he's stopped on New Jersey roads about a dozen or more times to help motorists and says that he plans to keep doing so.

"What would you want somebody to do with you if something like that happened to you?" he asks. "So immediately that's not even a thought and I think most people would do that."

Huson works in the Army recruiting center in downtown Newark. He has served time in Bosnia.
