The beach at Surf City is being inspected for World War I munitions mistakenly pumped ashore during a beach replenishment project.
The inspection is the second round of cleanup by the federal government. Medal detectors were employed in the munitions search last year. Heavier machinery is now being brought in that can dig approximately eight feet down to sift through sand.
?This is an expensive way to go, but it?s the only way we know that this is [the] best possible way to check,? says George Follett, of the Army Corps of Engineers. ?It'll be about 99 percent. There's gonna be some stuff offshore and we're not gonna be able to guarantee that we get all that, but certainly anything on the beach we should be able to get."
The cleanup is being performed from 25th Street in Surf City to South 5th Street in Ship Bottom. The Army Corps expects to finish the project before Memorial Day weekend.
