The Archdiocese of Newark announced the chaplain of a Summit all-boys Catholic high school is now on leave as the county investigates sexual misconduct allegations against him.

The archdiocese says these complaints have been issued over the past several days towards Rev. Salvatore DiStefano, Oratory Preparatory School's chaplain.

The Archdiocese of Newark emphasized that Father DiStefano's suspension should not be considered a punishment, as the Union County Prosecutor’s Office investigation on the complaints is still pending.

Oratory Prep's website says DiStefano comes into the job with more than 30 years of experience, was a New York City police officer and served as chairman of the Department of Probation Task Force for sexual assault and sexual abuse prevention.

In a statement, the archdiocese added:

"Oratory Catholic Preparatory School Administration has informed parents and students of the developing situation and continues to be fully cooperative."

The statement added that classes and religious services are still taking place as usual at the high school.

Union County Prosecutor’s Office has so far not commented on the investigation.
