The American Lifeguard Association says half the pools in the U.S. could be unstaffed as a result of the national lifeguard shortage.

Some cities and counties are keeping their pools and beaches closed until they can find lifeguards.

Experts say low pay, a short work season and general lack of interest are all to blame.
