A suspected liquor store thief apparently broke down and wept when he realized his attempt to break the law was foiled Monday.
Edwin Calix, 19, allegedly tried to purchase a bottle of Hennessey cognac at Sykes Liquor Store in Trenton. When the cashier, 76-year-old Jeff Wadkins, asked for ID, Calix bolted for the door.
Wadkins managed to flip a hidden switch before Calix could escape. Calix allegedly told the cashier he would shoot him unless he was allowed to leave. Wadkins spoke into a police radio asking if any officers heard the altercation and was given a positive response.
Calix then attempted to escape through the back, but came out with his hands up once he realized the charade was over. Wadkins says the young man then sat down on the floor and began to cry.
Calix has been taken into custody and charged with armed robbery.
