(12/11/06) THE BRONX ? One year after the high-profile Nixzmary Brown case in Brooklyn made headlines, some say the Administration for Children?s Services (ACS) must still do more to improve.

ACS officials say they?ve made ?significant progress? on reforms put in place since Brown?s death. However, the union that represents ACS caseworkers says the changes haven?t all brought about progress. The union says many caseworkers still have too much on their plates with about 25 cases per worker.

The ACS says they?ve graduated about 550 new workers since January to help ease the workload. Now, the ACS says each caseworker has about 15 cases to deal with. ACS representatives also tout the ?Childstat? program, in which top agency management performs active case reviews. The union says Childstat is good, but hasn?t created any type of profound improvement.
