AAA: Cheaper gas prices fueling holiday weekend travel
AAA says more than 960,000 New Jersey residents are heading out of town this weekend and thousands more are heading to the Jersey Shore.
AAA tells News 12 New Jersey that about 871,644 New Jersey residents will be traveling by car, making it the highest volume of automobile travelers since 2005.
Part of the reason why so many are opting to hit the roads this holiday weekend is due to cheaper gas prices. According to AAA, the average price for fuel in the Garden State is $2.15. Last year at this time the price for gasoline was $2.54.
AAA Mid-Atlantic anticipates aiding 25,000 motorists over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. The organization expects approximately 6,400 car breakdowns in New Jersey.
New Jersey State Police issued a warning to motorists to drive safely during the holiday. There will be more than 140 troopers out on New Jersey's roads looking for intoxicated drivers, drivers using cellphones and people driving without seatbelts.
Nine people died in New Jersey last Memorial Day Weekend in fatal motor vehicle crashes, according to the state police.
