Some parents are concerned and startled Wednesday after news that a 9-year-old student brought a loaded handgun to school.
Police say the fourth-grade boy brought the .45-caliber semiautomatic to Clinton Elementary School in his backpack Tuesday. Public Safety Director Martin Helwig says another student told the boy?s grandmother about the gun in his bag. The grandmother then retrieved the weapon.
Police informed the school about the situation after receiving the gun from the grandmother. Police believe the boy got the gun from his home. However, they are doing tests to determine the source and ownership of the firearm.
The boy, whose name is not being released, is charged with unlawful weapons possession and possession of a firearm on school property. He has been suspended for nine to 10 days.
