Nearly 10 people safely escaped from two houses that caught fire in Elizabeth on Wednesday afternoon, according to Mayor Christian Bollwage.
The fire on the 400 block of Murray Street started around 1:45 p.m. Videos posted on the Citizen App showed smoke and flames pouring out of at least one home on the street. The fire is located across the street from Abraham Lincoln School 14.
Bollwage says that the fire started in one of the homes and then spread to another. He said that nine people between the two houses were able to get out - seven from one home and two from the other. He also said that the two other neighboring homes were evacuated as a precaution.
Officials have not said if anyone was hurt in the fire. But News 12 crews saw one woman being wheeled away on a stretcher, who appeared to be coughing. News 12 crews also saw at least one firefighter on a stretcher.
Bollwage said that because one of the homes has solar panels on the roof, it made it difficult for firefighters to get into the roof to douse flames.
Multiple fire departments came to the scene to fight the fire.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
