Fifty-one people were arrested Saturday in Galloway Township after officials say a cockfighting ring was found.
According to Atlantic County prosecutors, police officers saw a large group of people when they arrived at the home on S. Bremen Avenue, and many were trying to run away.
They say police made the arrests and found 50 roosters in crates, storage boxes and bags. Police also found a cockfighting ring, numerous cockfighting “kits” and seating for spectators, according to prosecutors. They say $37,000 in cash was also seized.
All the roosters were taken to new homes, officials say. Additionally, four dogs were removed. Three of the dogs were found to be living in deplorable, inhumane conditions in an outdoor shed, according to prosecutors.
The homeowner, Jose Madera, is being charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty, possession of a controlled dangerous substance and resisting arrest. The other individuals are also being criminally charged.
