A 5-year-old girl was killed Wednesday morning in a crash on the New Jersey Turnpike, state police told News 12 New Jersey.
Authorities said the deadly crash happened just after 3 a.m. on the southbound side near Exit 8 in East Windsor.
Officials said a Honda SUV struck the barrier on the turnpike and was sitting disabled in the right lane when a tractor-trailer pulled over to approach the vehicle.
Police said that after the first tractor-trailer stopped, a second tractor-trailer hit the Honda against the barrier and slammed into the stopped truck. All three vehicles were engulfed in flames.
State police said the 5-year-old girl was ejected from the Honda and died from her injuries. The Honda’s driver, a woman from Rahway, suffered only minor injuries, officials said.
The crash closed down two lanes of the Turnpike for seven hours.
No charges have been filed as this time.
