(AP) - Newark police say they've made an arrest ina shooting that wounded a 4-year-old girl outside her home.
Police Director Garry McCarthy said 26-year-old Rasheed Nelsonwas arrested shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The girl was wounded as Nelson allegedly exchanged fire with anunidentified gunman shortly before 4 p.m. outside the Betty ShabazzApartments.
The girl underwent surgery at University Hospital in Newark.McCarthy said she is in stable condition.
Nelson had gone to the same hospital for treatment of a gunshotwound to the hand before his arrest. He's being held on aggravatedassault and weapons charges.
Police say the man who shot at Nelson fled in a stolen Audi. Thecar was recovered, but the gunman remains at large.
