Firefighters spent Wednesday afternoon braving the cold conditions, as they treated hotspots and used ladders and drones to get a bird’s-eye view of the damage on the corner of 36th and Louisa streets in Borough Park.
The FDNY said a four-alarm fire broke out shortly before 2 a.m. in the back of a Jewish bakery, which residents said was a community staple.
“It’s a major loss because it’s a major matzah bakery; hand matzahs, mind you,” said one man who only gave the name of Meyers.
“They were serving the whole community, especially during the Passover time,” said Paul Kazi, of Borough Park.
Video from the FDNY showed heavy smoke and firefighters inside of the two-story structure.
Assistant Fire Chief Michael Woods said, about a half hour into the fire, the back porch collapsed and trapped one firefighter inside.
“We were quickly able to extricate that member from the scene,” said Woods. “He did suffer some serious injuries, and he went to a local hospital with burns to his hands and also some potential respiratory burns.”
Woods said two other adults and one child in a neighboring building were also injured.
All four victims are expected to be OK.
Fire marshals are working to determine the exact cause of the fire, but Woods said right now there is no reason to believe that it is arson.
