Police in Wall Township want the public’s help identifying the driver of a Subaru Crosstrek they say plowed into a landscaper clearing leaves and drove away, leaving the victim injured.
Neighbor Gina Blakeslee just watched the video for the first time.
“Actually, I'm speechless that someone would do that. I have no words,” she said.
Just before 11 a.m. on Dec. 8, Ring video shows the driver of a light blue-gray Subaru Crosstrek slamming into a landscaper on the shoulder of Ocean Road in Wall Township. The driver pauses, then speeds west toward Bailey’s Corner Road, leaving behind the injured man, according to the video.
Capt. Michael Hurden tells News 12 the worker just started to clear leaves when he was struck.
“This is a failure to do the right thing. The first thing you think of is the victim, what they went through, a hardworking landscaper just doing his job and flung from his mower,” said Hurden.
Some neighbors say that this section of Ocean Road can become extremely dangerous because of speeding drivers.
“They put the signs up to monitor your speed and when people see the lights flashing, they’re going to slow down,” said Blakeslee.
Police say if the driver had stopped and called for help, it could have been classified as an accident but that option is no longer on the table.
“Leaving the scene of an accident with injury, possible assault charges as well,” said Hurden.
Police want locals to check their cameras from Dec. 8 around 11 a.m. They say to look for a Subaru that likely has front-end damage. Call Wall Township police with any tips.
