Three teenage girls are facing assault, weapons, and conspiracy charges following an acid attack that injured multiple people last month in Jersey City.
The teens, ages 13, 14, and 15, were arrested following the June 15 attack, according to Jersey City police.
Authorities say the incident happened just after 7 p.m. on Wilkinson Avenue. According to police, two individuals drove by and threw a substance, believed to be sulfuric acid, at a group of people standing outside on a residential street.
All six victims suffered injuries, including skin burns. They were all expected to recover.
The scene prompted a heavy emergency response, including a HAZMAT team, as crews worked to determine the type of chemical involved. Neighbors reported hearing screams from the victims immediately following the attack. A witness told News 12 that one of the victims told first responders that the suspects “threw acid” at them.
The incident is believed to have started after a verbal argument escalated into a fight.
The suspects were charged with aggravated assault, weapons possession for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, knowingly risking injury or damage, and conspiracy.
