High heat and humidity linger across New Jersey today to create a dangerous environment. It is imperative to stay hydrated and to prioritize cooling. Highs today reach near 101 with feel like temperatures exceeding 105. Heat illness is a big risk today, so please use caution in this weather.
Wildfire smoke from distant fires in northwestern Canada will waft through our upper atmosphere tonight as the wind changes. Our southwest muggy wind changes to a north wind tonight that will not only lower humidity but transport a hazy sky into the Garden State. This hazy sky is wildfire smoke that may come down to the surface level and lower ground visibility and air quality for Thursday and Friday.
This hazy and smoky condition will lower the forecast high temperatures as it limits the sun's intensity. Highs will still be in the 90s but may not be as strong. Given the low humidity, the dry air feels more manageable, too. Dry heat means your body's sweat is more effective at keeping you cool, but it also causes your body to dehydrate faster. Increase hydration to prevent any issues over the next few days.
