A second person has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run accident that left one brother dead and another badly injured in North Bergen.
The hit-and-run happened last November when driver Rogelio Chavix-Tacon allegedly struck the two brothers as they were walking home from the movies. Michael Viruet died from his injuries and his brother, Adrian Viruet, was impaled on a fence and is still recovering.
Chavix-Tacon, who is in the country illegally, was eventually arrested and charged with the crime.
Michael Viruet, the boys' father, says he always thought there was more to the story.
"I knew something was not right," he says. "I had a gut feeling."
It turns out the father's instinct was correct, and on Wednesday the Hudson County Sheriff's Department arrested 28-year-old Sergio Ferreyra.
The Hudson County sheriff says Ferreyra allegedly knew about the hit-and-run and instructed Chavix-Tacon to hide the car. He says Ferreyra also told him how to fix it, in an attempt to cover up the crime. Chavix-Tacon supposedly worked for Ferreyra, according to the sheriff, and was driving the car owned by Ferreyra.
Ferreyra is charged with hindering and obstruction. He is also charged with insurance fraud and filing a false police report because he also allegedly tried to report his car stolen following the hit-and-run.
