Health officials said Wednesday that a second child, a boy under the age of 2, has died from the flu.
The second death occurred as the statewide level of respiratory viruses continues to be high. According to the New Jersey Department of Health, children under 5 years old, and especially those younger than 2 years old, are at higher risk for severe influenza.
Details about those cases have yet to be released. However, the second death occurred amid a shortage of necessary drugs like Tylenol and kids' ibuprofen that have become hard for pharmacies like Bell Pharmacy in Edison to keep on the shelves.
"Sometimes, they'll ship us one or two bottles, but that's about it, as fast as it comes in, is as fast as it's going," said the pharmacy's John Sclafani.
He added that he once received shipments of Tylenol every day and now deliveries for the over-the-counter drug come every three days or so.
"We actually do some compounding. We'll compound it into suppositories or into some liquid. We'll use powders from the lab. We have a compounding lab, so we're able to fill some need but not everybody's need," said Sclafani.
Last week, the United State Department of Health and Human Services announced that it's making an additional supply of Tamiflu available to respond to the increase in demand.
"Kids could take the Tamiflu liquid, so we do have that, and it's helped but certain parents still want their Tylenol. It's understandable," Sclafani.
With cases of COVID-19, the flu and RSV continuing to rise, the New Jersey Department of Health is encouraging parents and caregivers to get their children vaccinated against both the flu and COVID-19.
