Wilton schools briefly went into secure mode Monday after police received a report of a suspicious person near a polling location, according to the Wilton Police Department.

Police said a caller reported seeing an older man allegedly carrying what appeared to be a "barrel" over his shoulder as he walked toward the Clune Center polling location around 11:42 a.m.

Officers immediately responded and placed schools in a secure hold. Wilton High School was placed in lockdown because of its proximity to the Clune Center.

Police searched the area but did not locate anyone matching the reported description.

A review of surveillance footage later identified an older man wearing a military-green jacket and carrying a walking cane who partially matched the description.

Investigators determined the individual had been at the Clune Center for legitimate purposes and did not pose a threat to students, staff or the public.

The lockdown at Wilton High School was lifted after officers cleared the area, and the secure hold at other schools was also ended.

Officials said all activities resumed normally.
