Six Flags will add seat belts to Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure, one of three roller coasters getting the extra restraints after a man died in a fall from a similar ride in Georgia.
A Six Flags spokesperson said Nitro, Goliath at Six Flags Over Georgia and Raging Bull at Six Flags Great America in Illinois will be fitted with seat belts. Nitro has been closed since Oct. 12, when Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, 42, of Atlanta, fell from Goliath at the Georgia park.
Cobb County police and Georgia’s Office of Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire are investigating. What caused the fall has not been made public. State records show Goliath passed its annual inspection in March with no citations.
Six Flags closed several similar coasters at other parks as a precaution after the fall. The spokesperson said nine rides remain closed. Seat belts will be added to three of them.
The company said it is cooperating with the state investigation. It also has hired independent engineers and ride inspection specialists to review safety procedures at all of its parks.
“We know trust is earned through actions,” the spokesperson said.
There is no set timeline for when Nitro will reopen. The spokesperson said reopening will depend on the reviews, engineering requirements, availability of parts and required approvals.
