A volunteer fire chief was killed in a hit-and-run crash while working in a construction zone on the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison.

Brian Flanagan, 47, of Manchester, was struck by a vehicle in the southbound truck lanes of the turnpike early Tuesday morning. According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office, police received a 911 call at about 3:51 a.m. reporting the incident just south of Interchange 10 in Edison.

The prosecutor said emergency crews responded to provide assistance, but Flanagan was pronounced dead at the scene. Police also learned that the driver who struck Flanagan, later identified as Anthony Bernardi, 40, of Edison, had left the scene of the crash.

During the investigation, officers were able to locate Bernardi. He was charged with aggravated manslaughter, death by auto and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

As word of the crash spread, first responders from multiple towns in New Jersey posted condolences, including Flanagan’s fire company.

“It is with great sadness that Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company announces the unexpected passing of our beloved chief, Brian Flanagan, this morning,” Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Company said on social media. “Brian was not only our chief, but a loving husband, father, uncle, friend, and brother to our fire company family. His loss leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone grieving this heartbreaking loss. Rest easy, Chief. Thank you for your service and dedication. You will never be forgotten.”

Other departments and EMS squads also posted messages, including Lanoka Harbor, West Windsor, High Point, New Egypt, Waretown and Manchester.

“Our hearts go out to all of you as you navigate this unimaginable loss. The fire service is one big family, and when one of our own is lost, we all feel it,” West Windsor posted. “Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this incredibly difficult time.”

Services for Flanagan have not yet been announced.
