Long before hockey games, concerts and arena crowds filled South Broad Street in Trenton, travelers gathered at the Old Eagle Tavern. Now, more than 250 years after it first opened its doors, the historic landmark is set for a major restoration.

The City of Trenton and Mercer County are moving forward with plans to restore the colonial-era building, which has stood vacant for more than three decades. Officials say the project will return the property to its original purpose as a restaurant, tavern and community gathering place.

Located directly across from CURE Insurance Arena, the Old Eagle Tavern dates to about 1765 and was once a popular stop for locals and travelers. The building has remained empty since the early 1990s, but a major rehabilitation effort is now underway, supported by a $3.5 million grant from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and additional investment from the city and county.

Once renovations are complete, officials plan to seek proposals from qualified restaurant and hospitality operators interested in reopening the property.

City officials believe the project comes at a “promising time for the South Broad Street corridor,” citing the arrival of the Trenton Ironhawks hockey team at CURE Insurance Arena. They hope the tavern will become a destination for hockey fans and other visitors attending nearby events.

City and county leaders say the restoration represents both a preservation effort and an economic development opportunity. The project will include structural and accessibility improvements, a modern commercial kitchen, updated building systems and preservation of the building’s architectural features.

According to officials, some repairs have already been completed, including the reinstallation of historic windows. Trenton is targeting spring 2027 for the reopening, pending completion of renovations and selection of an operator.

Mayor Gusciora also connected the restoration to Trenton’s commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary.

“As we celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, we should remember that Trenton’s history isn’t confined to museums or monuments,” Gusciora said. “It’s in the buildings and neighborhoods that have shaped our city for generations. The Old Eagle Tavern gives us an opportunity to preserve that history while making it part of Trenton’s future. And what better way to celebrate that history than by raising a glass in a tavern that dates back to colonial America?”
