A reported carjacking in Shelton has led to criminal charges after investigators determined the incident never happened.

The Shelton Police Department says officers responded to a reported carjacking and launched an investigation led by Detective Nugent.

Police say detectives reviewed surveillance footage from multiple locations, examined time-stamped photographs and gathered other evidence that contradicted the account initially given to responding officers.

Investigators determined the reported carjacking did not occur as described.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested two New Brunswick, New Jersey residents on Oct. 12.

Authorities say 40-year-old Danelly Diaz is charged with falsely reporting an incident.

Police say 29-year-old Kamran Raja is charged with conspiracy to falsely report an incident.

Both are scheduled to appear in Derby Superior Court.
