The city took the next step in reconstructing Coney Island's famous boardwalk.

Officials announced on Wednesday that they're looking for the design team to lead the $1 billion project, which includes a 2.4-mile stretch of the boardwalk.

The city called the announcement the "first formal step" in delivering the billion dollars, with the hope of selecting a design team in Spring 2027.

Last December, the city made a $1 billion commitment to reconstruct the nearly century-old boardwalk.

Some residents say the planks along the boardwalk are a problem.

"It's basically like a minefield at this point," said Tatyana Segal, who lives nearby. "We have protruding nails, sticking boards, a lot of trip-and-fall accidents."

"The planks of the boardwalk have destroyed two of [my brother's] wheelchairs," said Jose Santiago, who also lives nearby.

While there is no exact timeline, the completion is still expected to be years away. Officials said crews continue to make repairs on the boardwalk between April and November.
