Sources tell News 12 a swimmer was bitten by a shark at Field 6 at Jones Beach State Park on July 3.

The bite occurred around noon, and the swimmer had injuries to their right foot. They were transported to Nassau University Medical Center for treatment, sources said.

“Lifeguards carried him back to the surface, and they helped him out,” said Adalynne Dery, whose family was visiting Jones Beach from Connecticut. “He was holding a rag on his foot, and there was blood all over his toes.”

New York's Office of Parks and Recreation confirmed that a visitor was bitten by an unknown marine wildlife near Field 6. Sources confirmed it was a shark.

Officials said they believe the swimmer's injuries are not life-threatening.

Swimmers were kept out of the water for an hour while lifeguards searched for the shark. When no sharks were seen, swimmers returned to the ocean.

“There are millions of sharks in the Atlantic Ocean,” said George Gorman, New York State Parks regional director. “We'll be monitoring the beaches beginning tomorrow morning. First thing, we'll have drones up, and we'll have drones up all day long tomorrow so that we can watch over the waters and keep everyone as safe as we possibly can.”
