Man accused in Hartford double shooting dies in Massachusetts standoff

The suspect accused of killing a New Britain woman and injuring a second woman in Hartford has died following an hours long standoff in Massachusetts, Hartford police say.

Police identified the suspect as 46-year-old Chad Petitpas.

Police initially responded to Magnolia Street in Hartford around 7 p.m. Wednesday after receiving a ShotSpotter alert. Officers found an unresponsive woman inside a parked vehicle suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The woman was identified as 46-year-old Diana Tirado, of New Britain.

Investigators also found a second woman on a nearby sidewalk with a gunshot wound. The victim, a woman in her 30s, was taken to the hospital and was stable. She has not been identified.

Police were able to identify the suspect as Petitpas and learned he was located at a hotel room in Holyoke, Massachusetts. Hartford Police Major Crimes, Massachusetts State Police and Holyoke police all responded to arrest the suspect.

The hotel was evacuated except for the suspect's room.

Authorities were able to make contact with the man and attempted to have him surrender. Instead, the man barricaded himself in the room and refused to leave. eave.

Police say following an hours long standoff, the Petitpas died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Hartford Police Major Crimes and Crime Scene Divisions continue to investigate this incident.
