A dangerous surge in drug overdoses over a single 24-hour period has prompted an urgent public health warning in Cape May County.

Between June 11 and June 12, 2026, emergency personnel responded to five drug-related overdoses, one of which resulted in a fatality. While a preliminary investigation has not yet confirmed whether the five cases are directly connected, the Cape May County prosecutor is warning the community about an increasingly toxic and unpredictable street drug supply.

Investigators believe the local supply of heroin and fentanyl is being heavily adulterated. Officials warned that the overall toxicity of these street substances is unknown to users and can be immediately lethal. To combat the spike, the Cape May County forensic laboratory is being used to analyze controlled substances seized during ongoing investigations. By leveraging a local laboratory within the prosecutor’s office, officials can significantly speed up the time it takes to identify these illegal and dangerous substances.

In response to the crisis, the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office Gangs, Guns and Narcotics Task Force is working alongside local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to aggressively target the distributors of these illegal substances.

Alongside law enforcement efforts, the county is deploying resources to support those struggling with addiction. The Hope One Mobile Unit travels directly into local communities on a weekly basis to provide addiction and recovery services. For immediate assistance, a 24/7 recovery support hotline is available at 609-522-4375.

The prosecutor’s office is urging families to educate their children and loved ones on the extreme dangers of illegal street drugs.
