Public urged to follow ‘No Drone Zone’ rules during World Cup

Essex County officials are reminding residents and visitors that FIFA World Cup 2026 match venues and fan-related events will be designated as “No Drone Zones.”
Officials said unauthorized drone use near stadiums is illegal and poses safety risks. The Federal Aviation Administration will enforce temporary flight restrictions during matches and fan festivals.
Officials said violators could face penalties including fines of up to $100,000, criminal charges, possible imprisonment and confiscation of drones.
“Public safety is our top priority,” Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens II said. “We urge everyone to follow the law and leave the drones at home.”
New Jersey awards $5 million for World Cup fan events
New Jersey has awarded $5 million in grants to 34 organizations hosting public fan experiences and community events ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Gov. Mikie Sherrill announced.
The NJ World Cup Community Initiative will help fund fan zones, street fairs, watch parties and festivals across North, Central and South Jersey.
Officials said three organizers will receive regional, multi-day, multi-location event grants. Other organizations will receive Statewide Community Experience grants for smaller events.
The initiative was developed and funded by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. Choose New Jersey is administering the grant application and distribution process on behalf of the state, with final award determinations approved by the NJEDA.
Officials said the goal is to extend the economic impact of the World Cup beyond the stadium and support local communities and small businesses.
“Through this initiative, we are supporting small businesses and empowering communities across New Jersey to create exciting experiences that bring residents and visitors together throughout our state ahead of the tournament, and during the World Cup,” said Sherrill.
