President Trump gave an update on U.S. military action against Iran Wednesday night, describing the strikes as a success and defending the operation.
Trump said the military delivered what he called “swift, decisive, overwhelming victories on the battlefield” in Operation Epic Fury. He said the operation was necessary and again pledged to never allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon.
Afterwards, Sen. Chris Murphy sharply criticized the president’s speech.
“That speech was grounded in a reality that only exists in Donald Trump’s mind,” Murphy said. “We are spending billions we don't have and losing American lives in a war that is destabilizing the world.”
Murphy said the president’s remarks left Americans uncertain about the country’s direction.
“And making us look feckless. And no one in America, after listening to that speech, knows whether we are escalating or deescalating,” he said.
