Edison Township is preparing for an influx of World Cup visitors by launching a new Restaurant Passport program. Travelers entering New Jersey with their official passports will be able to pick up Edison’s version at local restaurants and hotels.
The township plans to distribute between 10,000 and 20,000 passports. Each booklet will list more than 400 restaurants in Edison. Every participating restaurant will offer a unique stamp based on its type of cuisine.
Edison Mayor Sam Joshi said the township is ready for the crowds.
“Edison is the restaurant capital of New Jersey. We have the most locally owned restaurants in the state,” he said.
Meanwhile, local restaurants are preparing for increased demand. Spice 24 said it is bringing in extra staff and preparing additional food. Taco Empreso expects international fans and is installing large TVs for match days.
Though Edison is just over 30 miles from MetLife Stadium, where the World Cup will be played, officials are confident Edison will still see an influx of guests.
"We are right in between East Rutherford and Philadelphia. Geographically, it's an ideal location for anyone that coming for the World Cup," Joshi said.
Visitors can collect stamps throughout their stay, and filling the passport will make them eligible for prizes.
“At one point or another you’re going to be crossing through our roads anyway. So stop here and make sure you eat," Mayor Joshi said.
