An elderly homeless woman was found dead inside a car during freezing conditions in Toms River, where snow and cold weather may have played a role in her death.

The woman was discovered Tuesday in a Walmart parking lot just off Route 37, according to Toms River police, who said a cause of death has not yet been determined and is not believed to be suspicious.

Paul Hulse, the CEO of the homeless charity Just Believe, said he arrived on scene shortly after the woman’s body was found.

Hulse said the car was buried in snow and had to be dug out after the body was removed. He added there was a small amount of gas still remaining in the vehicle.

Hulse said he believes the woman was stuck inside because of the snow and may have turned the car on and off to run the heater to stay warm. He said he believes she eventually fell asleep and later the car battery died.
