A Newark firefighter was among those killed in a head-on crash early Monday morning on I-80 in Totowa, officials have confirmed.

Albin Fermin, 30, was assigned to Engine 10, according to Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. He began his service with the fire department on Feb. 5, 2024.

NJ State Police say Fermin was driving a Honda sedan in the wrong direction on I-80 when he crashed head-on into an SUV at milepost 54.1 westbound in Totowa.

"A Buick SUV, operated by Joanne Furman, a 60-year-old female, with passengers Imani Alexis Furman, a 24-year-old female, and a two-year-old child, all from Norwich, Connecticut, was traveling westbound on I-80," NJ State Police said Monday in a statement, adding that Fermin has been traveling eastbound on the westbound side of the highway when the impact occurred.

Fermina and Imani Furman were killed in the crash, police said. Joanne Furman sustained serious injuries, while the 2-year-old suffered moderate injuries. Both were transported to the hospital.

The crash initially prompted first responders to shut down all lanes of the highway. The roadway was later reopened, but police say the crash remains under investigation.

In a statement on Facebook, the Captain Wayne Brookes Jr. Foundation - started in memory of a fallen Newark firefighter - offered condolences to the family and Fermin's fellow firefighters.

"The Foundation extends our deepest condolences to the family and Fire Family of our Brother, Firefighter Albin Fermin. We also offer our heartfelt sympathies to the family of Alexis Furman of Norwich, CT. Our thoughts remain with all those still recovering from this tragic event, and we pray for healing, comfort, and strength in the days ahead. May God be with you all," the foundation said. "Praying for everyone affected."
