Wayne Township is getting tough on e-bikes.

The township council is expected to a pass an ordinance with rules for e-bike riders on Nov. 5.

Wayne Mayor Christopher Vergano says those rules are directed at teens and their parents.

One of those rules will place a ban on e-bikes being ridden on roads where the speed limit is over 25 mph.

Among the other rules there’ll be a ban on riding at night between 8 p.m. and 8 a.m.

E-bikes won’t be allowed in parks. No passengers will be allowed and anyone under 17 will need a helmet.

Wayne joins other townships like Park Ridge, Perth Amboy and Secaucus with similar measures.

The mayor of Wayne says he’s pushing this ordinance because he sees how teens are riding e-bikes and fears it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

“It’s a big hazard out there and we’re trying to prevent somebody from getting killed. Perhaps they should all be registered. Perhaps they should all have insurance requirements,” said Mayor Vergano.

The mayor of Wayne says he’d like to see a statewide law regulating e-bikes.

Until there’s a vote in Trenton, the mayor says you can expect to see more townships moving to regulate e-bikes on their own.
