Rep. Josh Gottheimer has introduced legislation to help protect poll workers from increased threats of violence, harassment and intimidation ahead of the presidential election.
A recent study by the Brennan Center reports that 38% of all local election officials report experiencing threats, harassment or abuse.
The Democratic congressman says that while there are more than 100 threats of death or violence made to workers and officials during the 2020 election, there have only been 13 federal prosecutions.
“The idea that we even have to have this conversation is outrageous but our democracy rests on the shoulders of those who dedicate their time and energy and many days and far too often their personal safety now to ensure our elections run smoothly,” Gottheimer said. “This is not just about counting votes. This is about upholding the principles of decency fairness and respect that define us as Americans in....the greatest democracy in the world.”
Among other protections, the legislation states that harassing, intimidating or threatening an election official is a crime punishable by up to six months in jail or a $2,500 fine.
