Firefighters battled the blaze in Union County overnight. Crews worked in bitter cold temperatures while putting out the fire on S. Second Street in Plainfield. The fire was under control by 5:00 a.m. but not before forcing those inside out of the building.
One person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. No firefighters were injured. Red Cross is assisting eight people who were displaced. There is no word yet on what caused the fire.

In Maplewood, a fire caused extensive damage to a home and a car on Gifford Court in Maplewood. The upstairs of the home appears to be destroyed, while the downstairs also suffered significant damage inside and out. A car parked in front of the home was destroyed by the flames.
White brick along the front of the house was blackened by smoke and soot from the fire. No injuries have been reported, but officials have not confirmed if anyone was hurt. The Red Cros is helping eight people from three families.
