Two men and six horses were struck by lightning at a Colts Neck polo match Sunday afternoon.

Umpire Stephen Conroy, 49, called off the match after seeing lightning flash in the sky. As he tried to load horses into a trailer, he was hit by a lightning bolt and knocked unconscious. Another man and six horses were also struck.

The electrical force of the lightning bolt initially left Conroy paralyzed from the waist down. The 49-year-old says he knew something was wrong when he regained consciousness.

"I tried to get up," Conroy says. "I couldn't move. I could feel something going down through my body and out of my boot."

However, Conroy was able to drag himself to safety using his one good arm.

Doctors are giving Conroy a good prognosis. His heart is being monitored and Conroy is being pumped with saline to help flush out the muscles in his arm.

Conroy hopes to be back on the field Sunday to umpire another match.
