Two suspects are in custody and a Linden police officer is recovering after Friday?s shooting at a check cashing establishment.
Authorities say the shooting occurred when Officer David Manganiello responded to a call of someone trying to illegally cash checks at Speedy Check Cashing. Manganiello, who was wearing a bulletproof vest, was shot at close range in the chest.
Police immediately arrested the alleged shooter, Leonardo Grullon, of Elizabeth. He is charged with attempted murder and is being held on $1.5 million bail. Grullon?s alleged accomplice, Brenda Hernandez, of Elizabeth, was also arrested when she showed up at police headquarters Saturday looking for Grullon.
Authorities believe Friday was the third time Grullon and Hernandez tried to illegally cash checks at Speedy.
Meanwhile, Manganiello is resting at home. He is on administrative leave. It is not known when he?ll return to work.
