Authorities say a small plane crashed Thursday afternoon on a recreation field in Cresskill just hours before kids' sports practices were set to begin, injuring the two people aboard.
The Coast Guard says the plane's occupants are part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Coast Guard spokeswoman Sabrina Laberdesque says their injuries aren't considered life-threatening. Their names were not officially released.
The pilot of the plane was identified as Yakov Rosenberg, according to Jewish volunteer group Chesed Shel Emes. Rosenberg was a volunteer with the organization.
The accident involving a single-engine 1978 Cessna Skyhawk happened late Thursday afternoon at Regan Field behind the Cresskill Swim Club.
Authorities say the occupants were surveying the Hudson River when they encountered problems and radioed air traffic controllers at La Guardia Airport.
They aimed to land in the river but instead came down in the field about 2 miles west.
Police say the cause of the crash is not clear.
