A 16-year-old boy is facing charges in a shooting that left a 17-year-old boy dead Friday night in Sayreville, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office (MCPO).
Officials say it happened before 11 p.m. in Woods Edge Court in the Parlin section of the borough. They said the two knew each other, which means the shooting was not a random act of violence.
Surveillance footage obtained exclusively by News 12 shows the shooting happened in the middle of an altercation between several teenagers.
"It seemed like they were bickering with each other. Somebody had a baseball bat, and some kid was also recording at the same time," a neighbor told News 12. "So, I thought it was best to maybe close the door and not get involved. So, I closed my door, and as soon as I did that, I heard three gunshots."
Footage shows the teens arguing, with one teen being beaten on the ground. Then several shots ring out in quick succession and teens scramble in all directions.
Neighbors said the victim who was shot didn't make it very far.
"Unfortunately, the person, they chased him down around my backyard, and he fell right between ours and our neighbor's backyard," a neighbor told News 12.
The 17-year-old victim's family is now mourning him.
"This guy shot bullets into a crowd, and my brother was shot dead," said Oz, an individual who identified himself to News 12 as the victim's brother. "He's a good kid. I'm telling you. Just bad moment, bad crowd, bad timing, that's literally what just happened to him."
Oz said he'd become concerned about his brother's whereabouts late Friday and tracked him to Sayreville using the location on his phone. He said he stayed at the crime scene and police eventually asked him to identify a shooting victim.
"They said, 'I'm going to show you a photo, it's gruesome. I don't know if you want to see it or not, but is this him?' At that moment in time, it was him," Oz said.
Oz said he and his brother are both from East Brunswick.
A letter obtained by News 12 was sent to parents in the East Brunswick Public Schools District on Saturday informing them that a student had died.
"He was a senior. He was about to finish high school. He was about to go on with his life, go to Lincoln Tech. He was going to do a whole bunch of stuff, and now he's never going to get the opportunity to do that," Oz said.
MCPO said the 16-year-old who was arrested is being charged with acts of juvenile delinquency that if committed by an adult would constitute murder. They said he's being held at the Middlesex County Juvenile Detention Center ahead of a hearing with a family court judge.
"How does a 16-year-old get a gun in his hand. How does that happen? How does someone let that happen?" Oz questioned. "This kid has no right to be able to carry that thing with him."
