One of two men accused of speeding through a fatal crash scene last week in Union City will remain detained, a judge decided on Wednesday.
Paterson residents Aryan Acosta-Reinoso, 24, and Ricardo Suazo, 25, were both arrested and charged after they allegedly drove motorcycles through a crash scene, where a 16-year-old was hit and killed by a Union City garbage truck, authorities said.
At a detention hearing on Wednesday, a judge denied release for Acosta-Reinoso. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. Acosta-Reinoso’s attorney asked the judge to consider his client’s clean record.
Prosecutors, however, argued that Acosta-Reinoso was driving a stolen motorcycle and, for that reason, he intentionally sped through the crash investigation to get away from police - even trying to get rid of the bike. He was arrested at his home days after the incident.
As for Suazo, the judge released him with conditions.
Prosecutors said Suazo struck four Union City police officers and the garbage truck when he sped through the scene, sending him to a hospital with his own injuries.
Three of the four officers who were struck were taken to the hospital for treatment. The fourth was treated at the scene. Officials said all of the officers are expected to be OK.
