One day after federal officials rounded up 11 politicians in a bribery sting, one defendant stands out among the rest.
Former Passaic City Councilmember Jonathan Soto is the sole Republican charged in the corruption probe. Soto is among 10 state Democrats named in the case. Others named include Passaic Mayor Sammy Rivera, Assemblyman Rev. Alfred Steele and Orange Mayor Mims Hackett, all well-known Democrats.
The FBI had set up a phony insurance brokerage company to investigate the political officials. U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie says Soto was secretly taped sounding eager to join in the bribery.
All 11 politicians and a private citizen face up to 20 years in prison and $250,000 fines if convicted of extortion.
