A young girl was grazed by a bullet Wednesday night amid a police shootout outside her home.
Neighbors tell News 12 New Jersey that the 8-year-old was apparently inside her home with her mother watching TV when a bullet came through the back of their house and grazed her on the forehead.
According to investigators, the bullet seemed to stem from a shootout happening outside between an Asbury Park police officer and a suspect.
The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office says that Asbury Park Patrolman Terrance McGhee approached a 20-year-old man at the corner of Atkins and Springwood avenues at around 7:20 p.m. The officer apparently felt a handgun on the suspect, which caused him to start running.
The suspect, identified by family members as Dante Allen, and Officer McGhee began shooting at one other. Allen was shot in the leg, according to his ex-girlfriend.
"We have recovered, among other things, video recording that clearly indicates that Allen was the one who first fired shots at the officer," says Monmouth County Prosecutor Chris Gramiccioni.
Allen's injuries are not life-threatening, but he is currently hospitalized.
A Smith and Wesson semi-automatic 9mm handgun was recovered at the scene, prosecutors say.
Allen has been charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
The girl's pastor says she was taken to the hospital for treatment and is expected to be OK.
Officer McGhee is on paid leave while the shooting is investigated.
