The fire occurred just before 1:30 a.m. Wednesday at a second-floor apartment located at 1006 McLean Ave.
"It was very scary. At first, I thought it was my apartment on fire and I was shaking," says Krystal Bartholomew, who lives across the street.
Bartholomew called 911.
"I've never seen anything like that before," says Bartholomew.
When emergency crews got there, they found a man inside the apartment unit. Officials say emergency crews tried lifesaving efforts on him but he later died.
Officials have not released his identity or age.
No one else was seriously hurt in the fire. A couple of firefighters had minor injuries but they're expected to be OK.
Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire. They tell News 12 they don't believe it's anything suspicious at this point.
