A wrong-way driver fleeing the scene of multiple hit-and-runs in Union Township collided with another vehicle, causing a fiery crash that left one person dead.
A Dodge Charger driven by a 71-year-old Union resident first struck multiple vehicles between the Lowe’s shopping center and a BP gas station on Morris Avenue.
The driver continued toward the intersection of Morris and Colonial avenues, where the Charger collided head-on with a Toyota Prius while traveling the wrong way at high speed.
A 66-year-old woman, the driver and sole occupant of the Prius, was taken to University Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
A third vehicle, a Subaru sedan driven by a 24-year-old Union resident, was also struck. The driver sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the Dodge Charger was hospitalized after the crash and remains under observation.
Police established an alternate traffic pattern following the crash. Morris Avenue remains closed between the Lowe’s shopping center and Colonial Avenue while members of the Union Police Traffic Bureau continue their investigation into the cause of the crash.
