(09/22/06) POINT PLEASANT ? Locksmiths are warning New Jersey residents about a lock-picking technique that?s so easy, the average person can learn it in minutes.
The method is known as bumping, and crooks can simply go on the Internet to learn the technique. Locksmiths say it involves using a blank key and a screwdriver to bump the lock?s pins out of the way and open a door. Bumping is very effective against typical, pin-tumbler locks that make up the majority of the market.
In order to thwart home invaders and robbers, locksmiths suggest investing a little more money in the purchase of high-security locks. Those locks are designed to be bump resistant and pick resistant. They may cost a few hundred dollars, but locksmiths say the piece of mind is worth it.
