The mayor of the Woodbridge Township has ordered for the demolition of neglected swimming pools in order to prevent mosquito breeding.

The town's aggressive attack on mosquito breeding follows concerns about the Zika virus as the summer months approach.

"[Mosquitoes] can go from a pupa to an adult in literally in seven days," said Mayor John McCormac. "They breed very fast, and that's why it's important to get rid of any standing water."

McCormac told News 12 that just last year, 38 pools were identified as dangerous. He said that of the 38, 20 of the homeowners responsible for the pools agreed to fix up the pools themselves, and the remaining 18 were taken care of by the Township.

This year, the Township has identified 33 abandoned properties that need to be checked for pools and standing water.

According to McCormac, the clean-up is paid for by the placement of a lien on the property owner's taxes. 

Residents are encouraged to report vacant and abandoned properties.
