Two young women avoided serious injury when a dump truck spilled 26 tons of gravel, crushing their car.
Manchester police say that Andrea Penna, 24, and Kathy McCabe, 22, were driving on Route 539 in Manchester and slowed down to make a left-hand turn. Police say that the dump truck behind them did not slow down and overturned, spilling its load on top of the car.
The car was crushed and the women were buried. Manchester Police Officer Ian Bole was the first officer on the scene.
“In my 10 years of experience here with Manchester, it's the worst accident I've witnessed at which point it isn't a fatality,” Bole says.
The rescue was captured on the dashboard camera in Bole’s cruiser. Officers quickly began shoveling the car and the women out.
Both women sustained minor injuries but were able to walk away from the crash. Truck driver Tayfun Obut, 41, also walked away with minor injuries.
The women, who are best friends, were too shaken to talk about their experience with News 12 New Jersey. But McCabe’s mother wants to offer her thanks to the officers.
“There were plenty of guardian angels around,” says Brenda McCabe. “My mom recently passed away and I believe she was there.”
Manchester police did not say if any charges would be filed against Obut.
